The Ultimate Portrait Prime, Upgraded

Slimmer, lighter, and newly enhanced, Sony's updated FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II Lens boasts faster autofocus, smoother bokeh, and features designed for video use. This lens offers the exceptional G Master sharpness and bokeh quality, making it ideal for portraits, events, and any other applications that benefit from a shallow depth of field, whether shooting stills or video.

Improved Optics with Smoother Bokeh

Sony pushes the boundaries of G Master excellence with the 85mm f/1.4 GM II, enhancing edge-to-edge sharpness and contrast by correcting a wide range of spherical and chromatic aberrations. The fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and provides precise control over focus when using shallow depth of field techniques. A Nano AR II Coating minimizes surface reflections, flare, and ghosting, improving contrast and color accuracy in bright lighting. The rounded 11-blade diaphragm delivers smooth, pleasing bokeh for selective focus. The optical design now includes two XA elements to reduce "onion ring" bokeh and effectively control astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other spherical aberrations. Additionally, two extra-low dispersion elements minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing, ensuring improved clarity and color neutrality.

Improved Control and Video Capabilities

As camera design increasingly caters to both photographers and videographers, this lens has been updated with features specifically tailored to video shooters' needs. It offers precise and smooth focus tracking, even at frame rates up to 120p. Focus breathing is significantly minimized, with support for the Breathing Compensation function in select cine-line and Alpha cameras. Linear Response MF provides a natural and intuitive manual focus experience, while the physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for seamless, silent aperture adjustments, perfect for video use.

Compact, Lightweight, and Robust Design

Around 20% lighter and 13% smaller than its predecessor, the 85mm f/1.4 GM II remains a durable, portable, and versatile choice for a wide range of applications. It features two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control. The hybrid construction, using both metal and plastic components, maximizes durability while maintaining a lightweight design. Its dust- and moisture-resistant build includes rubber gaskets at each seam and a rubber ring sealing the lens mount, ensuring reliable performance in challenging weather conditions. Additionally, the front lens element is treated with a fluorine coating to repel water, oil, and other contaminants, making the lens easier to clean and maintain.

Grace ★★★★★

The autofocus is noticeably snappier than the mark I, which makes a real difference when shooting moving subjects. Tack-sharp wide open, and the smoother bokeh at f/1.4 is exactly what I wanted for portraiture.

Chloe N. ★★★★★

I've been shooting portraits with this lens for two weeks and the bokeh is genuinely smoother than anything I've used before, especially at f/1.4. It's noticeably lighter than the previous version, which makes handheld sessions much less of a workout. The video-focused features are a nice bonus too.

Mia X. ★★★★★

The autofocus is noticeably snappier than the first GM version, locking onto eyes during a wedding shoot without hunting. Bokeh has that smooth, creamy quality I was hoping for, and the slightly lighter build makes all the difference for hand-held work all day.
