Variable ND Filter

A neutral density (ND) filter reduces light to control exposure, and a variable ND (VND) filter simplifies this process by allowing you to adjust the light reduction with a simple twist. The ProMaster Basis VND filter offers light reduction from 2 to 8 f-stops and can be adjusted to any point between. In both photography and videography, limiting light is essential for creative control. For instance, in still photography, a VND filter enables slower shutter speeds to create motion blur, like blurring water to suggest movement. In videography, where shutter speed is often fixed, a VND filter allows the use of a large aperture for shallow depth of field in bright conditions while maintaining proper exposure. Additionally, all ProMaster Basis filters feature the same filter thread on both sides, ensuring compatibility with lens caps and other filters. These filters are not only optically excellent but also affordable, offering outstanding value for photographers and videographers alike.

First time using a variable ND and the smooth rotation between 2 and 8 stops is really intuitive—no more fumbling with a stack of filters. It threaded onto my 52mm lens without any tight spots, and the image stayed sharp even at the darkest setting.

I was skeptical about the 2-8 stop range being enough for bright sunny days, but even at the darkest setting the image stays sharp with no color cast. The ring turns smoothly, which makes dialing in the exact exposure feel effortless. Nice little piece of kit for the price.

This filter is a game-changer for outdoor video work — I can dial from subtle darkening to near-blackout just by twisting the ring. The build feels solid and the glass is definitely crisp, with no weird color cast at the mid-range stops. My only tiny gripe is that the hard stop at 8 stops took a min
