Compare the SmallRig Universal Mobile Phone Cage and IG-02 IntegraGrip Cage on mounting options, grip style, and stability to choose the right mobile video rig.
Quick answer
Choose the SmallRig Universal Mobile Phone Cage if you need to attach microphones, lights, or other accessories; choose the IG-02 IntegraGrip Cage if you mainly want a more secure handheld grip with controller-style handling.
Mounting flexibility vs handheld control
The Universal Mobile Phone Cage is built around a screw-tightening mechanism that secures most smartphones from 2.2 to 3.5 inches wide, with or without a case. Its four cold shoe mounts and multiple 1/4"-20 threaded holes turn the phone into a platform for accessories, which is why it suits phone cage for mobile filmmaking setups where you need to add a light or microphone.
The IG-02 IntegraGrip Cage takes a different approach: it is a cage-style grip designed for a more secure and controlled shooting experience. It provides a stable platform for handheld video and photo capture, with an ergonomic hold for extended use. It does not list cold shoe mounts or threaded holes, so it is less about rigging accessories and more about improving how the phone feels in your hand.
When a cage replaces a gimbal
A phone gimbal alternative rig like the Universal Mobile Phone Cage does not stabilize motion electronically, but the screw-tightening mechanism provides greater stability than spring-loaded clamps, and the accessory mounts let you build a compact rig. If your priority is smooth handheld footage without a gimbal, the IG-02's ergonomic grip and controller-style hold can be a simpler alternative, though it offers fewer mounting points for add-ons.
Key trade-offs
- Accessory mounting: The Universal Mobile Phone Cage includes four cold shoe mounts and multiple 1/4"-20 threaded holes; the IG-02 IntegraGrip Cage does not list these mounting options. If you plan to add a microphone or light, the Universal Cage is the more expandable choice.
- Grip and control: The IG-02 IntegraGrip Cage is designed for a more secure, controlled shooting experience with an ergonomic hold; the Universal Cage focuses on stability through its screw-tightening mechanism. For long handheld sessions, the IG-02's grip may reduce fatigue, but it offers fewer rigging points.
- Phone fit: The Universal Mobile Phone Cage accommodates phones 2.2 to 3.5 inches wide, with or without a case; the IG-02 does not specify a width range, so check compatibility with your phone before buying. If you use a large phone or a case, verify the IG-02's fit or choose the Universal Cage for its stated range.
